MODELLING AND SIMULATION - DIGITAL TWINSTemporary contract | 36 months | BelvauxAre you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join usThe Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies. You will join the Intelligent and Clean Energy Systems (ICES) research unit at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and will actively contribute to the NCER-D2ET (Data-Driven Energy Transition Digital Twin) project, a national strategic initiative to develop Luxembourg's energy digital twin platform.NCER-D2ET aims to design and implement an integrated, data-driven digital twin of the national energy system, capable of simulating and analyzing multi-energy infrastructures (electricity, heat, gas, hydrogen) across spatial and temporal scales. The project involves the modelling of energy infrastructures, the development of scenario-based simulations, and the generation of actionable indicators to support decision-making. You will be part of the team responsible for the infrastructure modelling domain, which serves as a technical foundation for interoperability with energy market simulations and policy evaluation tools.Do you want to know more about LIST? Check our website:How will you contribute? You will act as the lead technical modeler within the infrastructure domain of Luxembourg's national energy digital twin initiative (NCER-D2ET), joining a dynamic research team working on its development. Your work will focus on the modelling, simulation and analysis of multi-energy infrastructures (electricity, gas, heat, hydrogen) at multiple spatial and temporal scales. These infrastructures form the technical backbone of the digital twin platform and enable scenario-based assessment of system reliability, flexibility, decarbonization and investment planning. You will ensure that infrastructure models are fully interoperable with market and policy layers, enabling cross-domain simulations aligned with national transition objectives. You will be mainly in charge of:Developing and implementing models of integrated energy systems, including electricity, thermal, gas and hydrogen infrastructures.Building multi-scale simulation frameworks, from national-level energy networks to local systems (districts, communities, buildings).Creating interoperable models responsive to external market and policy inputs (e.g. demand elasticity, incentives, regulatory constraints).Designing and executing large-scale simulation campaigns to evaluate infrastructure behaviour under future transition scenarios.Contributing to the design and implementation of intelligent scenario generators integrating socio-economic, environmental and technological factors.Collaborating with data scientists and IT engineers to structure simulation inputs and outputs within the NCER-D2ET data platform.Supporting the generation of key performance indicators (KPIs) to feed decision-making modules (e.g. security of supply, decarbonization goals fulfilment, infrastructure cost-efficiency, improving operational performance and reliability, etc.).Documenting and publishing methodologies and results through scientific publications, technical reports, and project deliverables. Is Your profile described below? Are you our future colleague? Apply now!EducationPhD in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Physics, or closely related field, and at least 3 years postdoc hands-on experience in the area with a strong foundation in modelling and simulation of multi-energy systems.Experience and skillsPractical experience in modelling and simulating multi-energy systems (electricity, gas, heat, hydrogen), using tools such as PyPSA, Calliope, Oemof, or similar open-source platforms.Familiarity with optimization frameworks (e.g. Pyomo, PLEXOS, or others), and numerical solvers (GLPK, HiGHS, CPLEX, Gurobi) for investment planning and operational analysis.Experience with dynamic or co-simulation environments (e.g., combining electric, thermal, and control modules), like Modelica (Dymola), GridLAB-D, or other simulation tools.Familiar with agent-based or behavioral energy system modelling to represent dynamic, non deterministic user behaviors and market participation.Proficiency in Python is required (pandas, PyPSA, Pyomo, etc.); additional knowledge of C/C++, Julia or Java is considered a plus.Ability to design and run simulation scenarios, integrating inputs such as market signals, policy constraints, or climate data.Familiarity with data engineering principles, working with structured simulation data, and collaborating with IT teams on data integration and APIs.Knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and tools like Docker and Kubernetes is an advantage, but not a requirement.Interest or experience in AI/ML-based forecasting or agent-based models (e.g. AMIRIS, EMLab) is welcomed.A good sense of initiative, self-organization, and a pragmatic, solution-driven approach to research problems.Excellent communication skills, both for technical documentation and interdisciplinary teamwork.Experience contributing to scientific reports or publications, and interest in collaborative RDI environments.Language skillsFluent in English (written and spoken).
